They dash through tunnels, scamper up ramps and cross over bridges. They soar over fences, hop onto seesaws, and weave in and out of rows of poles.

It's a challenging course, and the competitors haven't been given time to practice. They must keep their eyes on the obstacles, but also listen intently for directions from their coaches.

This sport — called agility — could stump an Olympic star. But the canine athletes running the course — from tiny Chihuahuas to Labrador retrievers — take it all in stride.

Agility has quickly gained popularity in the United States since the first exhibitions in the 1980s and has a strong following in Central Kentucky, where dogs such as Misty, an American Eskimo owned by Mary Barry of Lexington, can compete on courses of various levels of difficulty and also learn obedience and other skills. Misty, who was rescued from a Western Kentucky animal shelter, was introduced to the sport about two years ago.

Agility helped Misty bond with her owner and “has helped her focus tremendously,” Barry said. She also gets to socialize with other pets.

“She has to meet the new dogs first or she won't pay attention to me,” Barry said.
