The number on Kaitlin Snapp's race bib . 123 . foretold what was to come Saturday in the girls' KHSAA State Cross Country Meet.

The Danville freshman pulled away, easy as 1-2-3, to win her third individual Class A championship in a row, and her first as a high school student.

Her time for 5,000 meters, 18 minutes, 25.51 seconds, was best of the day and second-fastest ever at the Kentucky Horse Park in a State finals.
Sacred Heart's Emma Brink, who set the overall meet record of 18:20.52 last year, repeated as 3A champ. Jessie Murner of South Oldham prevailed in Class 2A.

Henry Clay is the highest- ranked team in the city, but the No. 13 Devils could have a tough road to travel to get back to the state tournament for a second straight year.

Their own district tournament this week has its share of potholes, including a Paul Dunbar team that has already beaten the Devils once this season.

In the first round of the 41st District on Tuesday, Henry Clay will face district tournament host Tates Creek. The Commodores have won 11 straight games and seem to be hitting their stride late.

Dunbar, which has won five of its last six games, will take on Lafayette in the other semifinal match.

BOWLING GREEN . St. Xavier's David Payne lived the storybook finish, but he got there without ever fully understanding the plot.

Trailing by two shots as he stood in the 18th tee box, Payne was thrilled when he carded a birdie that clinched the team title for the Tigers, the 17th in school history and the fifth in the last 10 years.

Then he found out the rest of the story.
David Payne shot a 4-under 68, and Justin Thomas finished at 69 to help put St. Xavier in the lead by two strokes after Friday's first round of the boys' state golf tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club.

Payne was alone in first place on the individual leader board after recording only one bogey during his round. Thomas, a sophomore who's led the Tigers all year, birdied two of his final three holes to finish in a three-way tie for second.

As expected, defending champion Marshall County joins St. X at the top of the standings, with the Marshals at 5-over and in second. They were led by senior Patrick Newcomb, who is in the group at 3-under along with Scott County's Kyle Wilshire.

Rounding out the top five in the team competition were Paul Dunbar, Lexington Christian and West Jessamine.

BOWLING GREEN . Neither rain nor lightning nor fog can keep the Glasgow Scotties from their appointed rounds.

Glasgow completed its run to the Leachman KHSAA Girls' State Golf Tournament title Thursday, knocking off defending champion West Jessamine 664-669 at Bowling Green Country Club. Scott County took third at 673.

The two-day format was extended by a day because of delays for lightning (Tuesday) and rain (Wednesday). Thursday's play was delayed 35 minutes because of fog.

While West Jessamine made the team finish interesting, cutting a 12-stroke gap to five, there was no individual drama. Just excellence over a 5,689-yard, par-72 layout.

Marshall County was something of a surprise when it won the boys' state golf championship last year, with Marshals sophomore Travis Thompson taking the individual title, too.
Nobody's overlooking Marshall County this year, though. The Marshals and perennial power St. Xavier are considered the favorites in the 36-hole competition that begins Friday and ends Saturday at Bowling Green Country Club.
Marshall County, led by senior Patrick Newcomb's 65, had the lowest team score (291) in regional play across the state.
But the Valkyries seemed to handle the pressure of being No. 1 from the pre-season to the post-season, and they showed why they were ranked that way with a 2-0 state championship victory over Highlands Saturday at Georgetown College's Toyota Stadium.
A heart condition has ended the basketball career of Lafayette senior Deron Linton, who was expected to be one of the top players in the 11th Region this season.

"It shocked me to hear that I couldn't play any more," Linton said. "I still want to, but I know it's not worth the risk."

The 6-foot-4 Linton, who averaged 15 points and nine rebounds as a junior, experienced shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue during pre-season conditioning.

Because Linton's father had died of a heart attack at age 42 in March, Lafayette Coach Damon Kelley thought it best that Deron get a thorough medical examination.

In one of the quietest coaching changes in the history of boys' basketball in Lexington, Ted Hall has succeeded Gene Kirk at Sayre.
Kirk, who won 557 games in 27 years at Woodford County and eight at Sayre, told school officials in early summer he was stepping down because of health reasons.
There was no press release or press conference to announce that Kirk was leaving, or that Hall, who had been a Spartans assistant, was taking the reins.
When Joe Blanton pitched six strong innings and smacked a home run to help the Phillies beat the Rays in Game 4 of the World Series Sunday night, Greg Shelton, Blanton's high school coach, was among his biggest fans at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

"It was great; I was so happy for Joe," said Shelton, who coached Blanton at Franklin-Simpson. "He's such a good kid, such a competitor. Some reporters from Philadelphia asked me what I expected out of Joe. I said I expected he'll step up and perform whenever there's a big game. He threw the ball just great Sunday night, and hitting a home run just topped things off. After the game when I saw him, he was tickled to death about that. He was grinning ear-to-ear."
It was Blanton's first career homer in the majors, and he became the first pitcher in 34 years to hit one in a World Series game.
Blanton, a burly 6-foot-3, 255-pounder, said his strategy at the plate was to close his eyes, swing hard and hope to make contact.

It turned out to be a not-so-fond farewell to Ishmael Stadium for Lafayette's football team Friday night as the Generals lost to Simon Kenton 33-6 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
Simon Kenton, led by a rock-solid defense and star running back Miles Simpson's four touchdowns, won a post-season game for the first time in 15 years.
The Paul Dunbar volleyball team's reward for winning a regional and advancing to state was to be a surprise ride to Louisville Thursday in a pink Hummer limousine.
The idea for the limo didn't come to pass, so parents drove their daughters to Louisville. That's where the Lady Bulldogs begin their quest to be the fourth consecutive Lexington school to reach the semifinals. Clary played baseball at Bryan Station (Class of 1985). His coaching background includes a stint as head coach of the Defenders from 1995-98, and as an assistant at Lafayette in 1992 and '93.

The third time was a charm for the Kentucky Softball All-Stars on Thursday at Bowling Green.

After being swept in each of the first two years of the best-of-three annual series with Tennessee, Kentucky rallied from a 1-0 loss in the first game yesterday to win the next two games and secure its first series victory.

Samantha Sparks of Russell, who was named the Most Valuable Player, scored the winning run in the third game after she singled in the bottom of the fourth (the game was cut short to five innings by agreement of the coaches). Sparks came all the way around to score when the ball got past the Tennessee center fielder.

LOUISVILLE . Sacred Heart volleyball coach Eric Garvey figured a showdown was nearing with his brother, Terry, the coach at Mercy, and his sister, Casey, a senior setter for Mercy.

Indeed, they got together in the finals of the state volleyball tournament Saturday night at Bellarmine with Mercy winning out 27-25, 25-18 to seal the Jaguars' fifth state volleyball title and their first since 1990.
Kelsey Anderson had a match-high 10 kills to lead Mercy, which finished the season 40-1.
